MASSASOIT HOTEL FIRE January 12, 1982

  1. It was a tragedy. The hotel had one of the longest, nicest bars in Massachusetts. In a large room to the left of the main entrance, one entered a quiet, tastefully appointed room with a long, gleaming mahogony bar, equipped with comfortable stools. The bar was nearly as long as the building itself. I will never forget going into the bar during the blackout of 1967, which cast the whole northeast into darkness. Candles provided the only light and an intimate atmosphere. There were about 10 customers enjoying their drinks and discussing the situation. Nobody knew what was going on, and nobody really cared. The point was to have your drinks before the loss of electricity made them warm. It was a wonderful blackout to us.
