DAYS WITH JFK

Yes, I was with him twice. The first time in October of 1958, when, as a Senator he was hosted at a reception in the Massasoit Hotel in Spencer, Massachusetts, where I took this picture of him and Mrs. Kennedy as they left.
The next time was on Sunday, November 24, 1963, when I spent 18 hours in a crowd that passed throught the Rotunda of the Capital at about 2 Monday morning. We were fortunate to be given extra time in the presence of the body because the crowd had to remain in place while Mrs. Kennedy paid a late night visit to the casket. It's never stopped seeming like yesterday.

WE WERE TROJANS

That day in November of 1963 reminds me of the loss of Troy as related in the Aeneid.

There was Panthus, who'd come unscathed through the Greek barrage. He was a son of Othrys, priest of Apollo's temple on the citadel. He was holding his holy emblems of office, and was hanging on to the images of his defeated gods and dragging his young grandson along as he rushed in panic for the gates.
"Where is the action? Which strongpoint are we making our stand on?"
I'd hardly got the words out when he came back at me:
"It's here - the final hour - Troy's time is up. As Trojans we no longer exist : Troy is history; so too is all the might and glory of the Trojan race. Jupiter, in cold blood, has gone over to the Greeks. Our city is in flames, and the Danaans are triumphant. The towering Horse bestrides the walls disgorging warriors, and Sinon fans the flames revelling in his victory. Others are massing where the gates stand open - all the countless thousands who came from mighty Mycene; others - weapons at the ready - have blocked the narrow alleys. A ring of steel waits poised for the kill, swords glinting. The front line of sentries is just holding out - but they are fighting blind."

Learning languages from each other.

One of the many reasons I am proud to teach Y3C is that they have been really up for sharing each other's cultures and languages. Everyday, we practice greeting each other in many different ways. We've practiced bits and pieces of Chinese, French, Arabic, Turkish, Indian, German, Irish and more. However, no one has taught us more (so far) that Mr. Sekula. Yes, that's right, Y3C had a visit from a very special teacher last week, our very own Maksymillian. Here he is taking us through the basics of Polish phonics. Apologies for the video quality but I think you can see that we are very lucky to have so many different cultures in our class willing to share!

mm, cm, metres and kilometres

Year 3C have been working extremely hard over the last few weeks at learning how to measure accurately. We have carried out many studies including this one, to find out the most common length of shoe in our class. We found out that we have mostly big feet (over 20cm long!).

Y3C are doing fantastic work in Numeracy.
